Burlington's Fred Norman Awarded Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers
It was an honour to present William Frederick (Fred) Norman the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers during this morning’s Battle of the Atlantic memorial service.The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers recognizes exceptional volunteer achievements from across the country and abroad, celebrating a wide range of voluntary contributions. It is awarded by the Governor General of Canada.Fred’s service over many years to the residents of Burlington and beyond makes him a most worthy recipient. He embodies the medal’s goals, and our City of Burlington motto: Stand By. He has stood by naval veterans and their families, and he has stood by to be ready for action to serve whenever called upon.
For more than 33 years, Fred has contributed to causes supporting veterans and other members of his community. Through organizations such as the Burl-Oak Naval Veterans and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 486, he has used his voice and organizational skills to honour service members and assist veterans in need.Fred was named as one of the top 50 male citizens of the year for Burlington for the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.He is married to Elizabeth, a father to two sons and three daughters, Papa to 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren - with another one born on May 5.He has been Chairman of the Burl-Oak Naval Veterans since 1998.

The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers recognizes exceptional volunteer achievements from across the country and abroad, celebrating a wide range of voluntary contributions.As an official honour created by the Crown, the Sovereign 's Medal for Volunteers is part of the Canadian Honours System. The program has incorporated and replaced the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award, which was created in 1995, by then-Governor General the Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc.The Chancellery of Honours, part of the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, administers the program
