Burlington Announces Fare-Free Transit for Youth – Summer 2025 Pilot Program

I'm excited to announce that City Council has approved a Fare-Free Transit pilot program for youth aged 13 to 19 during July and August 2025! This initiative aims to make transit more accessible for our young residents, encouraging them to explore our city conveniently and sustainably.

• Duration: July 1 to August 31, 2025

• Eligibility: Youth aged 13 to 19

• Requirement: A valid PRESTO card is necessary to access the fare-free service

In 2023, we introduced free transit for youth during evenings and weekends, resulting in a 50% increase in youth ridership during those times. Building on this success, the upcoming summer pilot will offer fare-free transit throughout the day, providing greater flexibility for our youth to travel for work, leisure, or other activities.

Burlington Transit anticipates a 30 to 50 percent increase in youth ridership during the pilot. While this may lead to busier buses during peak times, we are committed to monitoring the situation closely to ensure a positive experience for all riders.
