Continued investments are being made to the expansion and enhancement of the new Skyway Community Centre and Arena, currently under construction, to make this facility as close to carbon net neutral as possible, for example by incorporating geothermal features, and so it can feature new programming spaces for the community. The planned public opening date for this new community centre is tentatively for fall 2024.Updates to the Skyway Community Centre and Arena  include:

  • An NHL-sized ice surface;
  • An indoor walking track; and
  • Additional community program space.

Additional features of the renovation project include:

  • Six change rooms with showers and washrooms;
  • Warm and cold spectator seating with accessible options;
  • Lobby with customer service area and offices; and
  • Universal washrooms.

A New Community Centre is being built to replace the single pad, Skyway Arena. The existing arena was demolished, and a new community centre will be built. The 48-year old building has reached a point where refrigeration equipment and building components have reached the end of their lifecycle, and repair and upgrades are required due environmental, accessibility and efficiency reasons.The new facility will include a low-carbon design to align with the City’s goal of having a carbon neutral operation.Public ArtIn summer 2023, the City invited the public to comment on the three public art finalists for the new Skyway centre. Stay tuned for announcements from the City on the selected artist and piece. The installation of the large-scale sculpture is planned tentatively for December 2024.Enhancements to Skyway ParkIn order to accommodate the improvements at the community centre, Skyway Park will also be redesigned to include a natural playground and one baseball diamond.Some of the new or improved items include:

  • New 275’ baseball diamond with backstop, line fence, irrigation, dugouts, player’s benches and bleachers;
  • Natural children’s play area;
  • Gathering areas with seating and shade structure; and
  • Accessible pathways.

The park will be closed until the project is complete in 2024.To stay up-to-date on the progress of the project, subscribe for updates on the dedicated Skyway Community Centre webpage on the City’s website.
