Investing in your City: Continuing Investments in Stormwater Management, Erosion Control & Drainage Improvements

The City is continuing investments in erosion control, drainage improvements and flood control mitigation with several stormwater management projects planned for 2024 and forecasted for future years. It's important to note that the forecast projects (2025-2026) are subject to change based on the annual review of the Capital Budget. You can view a list of the 2024 planned projects further down.The existing surface water drainage systems in Burlington include:
- 11 major creeks and several minor creeks within the urban boundary, totalling 93 km;
- 1,350 rural area culverts (16,000 m);
- 900 urban area culverts (13,000 m);
- 16,500 catch basins;
- 30 stormwater management ponds owned by the City; and
- 17 City-owned oil and grit separator manholes.
This service is delivered in coordination with the Roads and Structures Design and Construction, Parks Design and Construction and Asset Management sections of the Engineering Services Department; Roads, Parks and Forestry (RPF); the Region of Halton; Conservation Halton; the Niagara Escarpment Commission; the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks; and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Department of Fisheries and Oceans.The service provides:
- Planning, design, construction, permits and inspection of surface water drainage systems;
- Assistance to residents and property owners in addressing concerns/complaints regarding drainage issues;
- Maintenance of creeks, road allowance drainage, catch basins, storm inlet structures and oil and grit separator manholes;
- Site alteration review, permits, inspection and enforcement;
- In partnership with the Asset Management service, collecting inventory information and assessing infrastructure condition for data management; and
- Infrastructure renewal of storm sewers, accomplished as a customer of Roads and Structures Design and Construction.
