Investing in your City: Plowing More School Pathways & Improved Winter Salt Management Operations
Our weekly "Investing in your City" series that has been highlighting some of the significant investments being made in Burlington and that our community will benefit from, ends this week.
The City is continuing investments to help expand snow-clearing at school pathways and in parking lots, and to improve winter salt management operations -- all to help our community move around safely after winter storm events.
Winter Maintenance and Operations Investments:
Expanded snow clearing for parking lots to promote use of parks year round
This is an expansion of winter maintenance to approximately 20 city park parking lots that are not presently scheduled to be cleared because they are not immediately adjacent to a recreation facility. Parking lots need to be hard surfaced to be considered.
Benefit: The City will increase access and accommodate park users during the winter months by creating a safe parking locations for residents and visitors to use.
Expanded winter maintenance for school crosswalks to promote walking to school year round
As part of regular winter maintenance activities, this initiative will address concerns from both school crossing guards and the public with approximately 60 school crossing areas in need of enhanced snow clearing by prioritizing school crosswalk segments
Benefit: The City will prioritize school crossings during winter response to reduce the risk to both the general public and crossing guard staff through the proactive clearing of crosswalks on school days.
Updating of the City’s Salt Management Plan in order to improve the management of road salt used in winter maintenance operations -- tentatively coming to Burlington Council in December 2024
Winter sidewalk maintenance includes; plowing of all street side sidewalks and walkways connecting street to street. Priority sidewalks may receive salt or sand as required to reduce slippery conditions. This also includes clearing of bus stops and pedestrian crossings.
Winter maintenance for other City facilities including; parking lots, multi-use trails and walkways in designated areas, includes plowing, salting or sanding and shoveling.
