Statement from Mayor Meed Ward on the Sound of Music Festival

As Mayor, I want to acknowledge the financial challenges announced today by the Burlington Sound of Music Festival (SOMF) and their call for major sponsors to step forward.

The festival has long been a cherished part of our city’s cultural fabric, starting as a city-run marching-band parade in 1980. The festival has since evolved into an independently-run organization, earning nation-wide recognition as the country’s largest free music festival, providing a stage for established and emerging local, diverse and international talents.

The city has always been and remains a major partner and supporter of the festival, including providing permits, space, and financial support, as well as contributions through city staff and a Council appointee serving on the board. Current annual support totals $375,000—comprised of a $150,000 grant and a $225,000 repayable loan.

I remain committed to ensuring a sustainable future for our cherished festival, honouring its legacy and roots as a free community event for everyone to enjoy. We must also ensure our financial commitment in this festival is transparent, responsible and accountable to the community, where we have many existing and emerging festivals and events worthy of support.

While the City supports the Sound of Music Festival, it’s important to clarify that it operates as an independent organization. The City does not direct or manage the festival’s operations, planning, or financial decisions—these responsibilities rest solely with the Sound of Music Festival’s staff and Board of Directors.

Any questions regarding the fundraising campaign (see BSOMF press release available here: https://soundofmusic.ca/news/) or the organization’s operations can be directed to the Sound of Music Festival:
