US Tariffs Update — April 3
The imposition of tariffs has created chaos and concern for many in our community, and currently include 25% on Canadian Steel, aluminum, autos and parts, 25% on any goods non-compliant with the CUSMA, and 10% on Canadian energy and potash.
More may follow in coming days and weeks. We understand that these changes pose a very real risk to jobs and businesses.
I want you to know the city stands with our businesses and residents and will do what we can to take action and advocate on your behalf wherever needed.
Along with members of council, I have convened a Mayor’s Tariff Task Force to bring community stakeholders together to share information to support action and advocacy. Our third meeting took place yesterday with some ideas that will be brought forward to committee and council for consideration.
We are also coordinating efforts with the Ontario Big City Mayors’ (OBCM) Caucus, where I serve as chair. OBCM has formed a Tariff Working Group to bring together mayors from across the province to share insights and develop a collective approach for advocacy and action. Our third meeting is today.
We are also engaging with our federal counterparts to ensure Burlington’s needs are heard. You can learn more about our federal priorities here: Burlington.ca/FederalPriorities
We are aligning our efforts with provincial and federal actions, and support the measures they are taking, including counter tariffs, removal of interprovincial trade barriers, infrastructure and stimulus packages. We will ensure that the views of our businesses and residents are communicated in shaping any potential stimulus measures.
For our part, a report on Buy Canadian procurement will be presented to the Committee of the Whole next week, and in May, City staff will report back on options for interest-free deferrals of property taxes, development charges, and other fees and permits.
I want to assure residents and businesses that we care. We are aware. We are taking action. We are bringing our community together to support one another, collaborate on solutions, and advocate for meaningful assistance from all levels of government.
Stay tuned for updates as we continue this important work.
Thank you,
Mayor Marianne Meed Ward
