*Please see a news release issued by the City of Burlington.Burlington, Ont. — June 11, 2021 — The City of Burlington is making enhancements to the accessibility of Burlington Beachway. Enhancements include installing a Mobi-Mat®, as well as replacing wooden deck boards, guard rails and accessibility improvements to the public washrooms. These changes will provide a barrier-free path of travel to the beach and the water’s edge, allowing for a more inclusive waterfront experience for more visitors.

"The soft sand found at our beach can pose a challenge for visitors using walking aids, wheelchairs or strollers. It’s a great beach that everyone should be able to enjoy. Thank you to the members of the Burlington Accessibility Advisory Committee for their assistance with this accessibility enhancement for the park." -- Rob Axiak, Manager of Recreation Services, City of Burlington"The installation of the Mobi-Mats® at Burlington Beachway reiterate the City’s commitment to barrier free living for all of our citizens, and the BAAC couldn’t be prouder to have been part the consultations. We look forward to more barrier-free implementations in the near future." -- Adam Spencer, Chair of Burlington Accessibility Advisory Committee (BAAC)

About Mobi-Mat®Mobi-Mat® is a portable and removeable all-weather rollout beach access mat for pedestrians, wheelchair users, strollers and bicycles that improves access on the beach. The walkways are firm, non-slip and provide a stable surface for a wide range of users and made from eco-friendly materials and recyclable.About the BeachwayWith 6.8 acres of park space and two kilometres of lakeside trails, an outdoor pavilion and playground, there is plenty to do and see at the Beachway. For the weekend warrior or adventure seeker there are many active options - cycling, running, rollerblading and lake swimming. The Beachway is the perfect spot for a quiet stroll along a picturesque shore; build sandcastles, bird watch or simply take in the views and bask in an inspirational sunrise or golden sunset. The water is unsupervised (no lifeguards) so please use caution and always be within arm’s reach of children. There are four free, accessible parking spaces at Beachway Park; however, anyone who has a valid accessible parking permit can park in any parking space for free as long as the permit is displayed on their dash.MAYOR MEED WARD'S TAKE:This is what accessibility and inclusivity looks like! With the Mobi-Mat®'s on the sand at the Beachway and new wooden deck boards and guard rails, as well as accessibility improvements to the public washrooms, residents with mobility devices or those needing a bit more support on the sand and getting around can safely use our beach. Thank you to our City of Burlington staff for making this happen.Links and Resources:
