Burlington City Hall Flags at Half-Mast for Passing of Lydia Jones
I was truly saddened today to hear news of the recent passing of Lydia Jones who led the Burlington Chamber of Commerce from 1980 until retirement in 1995.Lydia moved to Barrie last year to be close to family and passed away shortly after her 92nd birthday. As BCC executive director, Lydia participated in the original twinning ceremonies with Itabashi, Japan — first in Burlington and later in Itabashi in 1990. That trip resulted in many business people connecting with the Burlington Chamber in the years following.Having come from the Hamilton Chamber in 1980, as an assistant manager, Lydia was a true trailblazer for women in leadership roles. She also helped build on the Burlington Chamber’s past achievements, including growing the Teen Tour Band from a small-town association into a much larger driving force and ambassador group for the city.
The flags at City Hall are lowered to half-mast today. On behalf of the City of Burlington and Council, we offer Lydia’s family, friends and those who knew her our deepest condolences. We are truly grateful for her service to our city and community.
