Burlington Council Approves Increase to Low-Income Seniors Property Tax Rebate for 2021 Tax Year

*Please see below a media release issued by the City of Burlington.Burlington, Ont. — Dec. 15, 2020 — Burlington City Council approved an increase to the low-income seniors property tax rebate at a Meeting of Council on Monday, Dec. 14. For eligible property owners, the rebate will increase from $525 to $550 for the 2021 tax year.The low-income seniors property tax rebate program is offered by the City to assist eligible seniors in lowering their annual property tax expense. Qualifying seniors, in receipt of the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), who own and reside in their home as their principle residence can apply on an annual basis. The deadline to apply for the 2021 tax year is Dec. 31, 2021.

  • To be eligible for the program, an individual or their spouse must meet the following requirements:
    • Be at least 65 years of age as of Jan. 1, 2021
    • Be the assessed owner and occupant of a residential property in the City of Burlington for at least one year preceding the application
    • Be in receipt of the Guaranteed Income Supplement pursuant to the Old Age Security Act
    • Have paid property taxes in full, excluding the applicable rebate
