Burlington Fire Prevention Week: The Messages Live On
*Please see below a news release issued by the City of Burlington.
Burlington, Ont. — Oct. 27, 2021 — Although Fire Prevention Week has now finished, the City of Burlington and the Burlington Fire Department are continuing to remind residents to check their homes for working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. The need for working alarms was highlighted in this year’s emotional Sound On Save Lives Fire Prevention Week campaign. Burlington Fire Department Captain Ralph, who tragically lost a friend in a house fire, tells how his friend could have been saved by a working smoke alarm. Captain Ralph is quoted as saying, “If I could go back, I’d ask him, check to make sure you have a working smoke alarm. It would have been the difference. One of these (smoke alarm) in his house was working, we’d have him here today.”Despite this tragic loss, Captain Ralph is channeling his grief into action by making a public appeal to “Sound On and Share”: asking everyone to ensure their sound is on by testing their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and sharing the message for others to do the same. Talk to your friends, family and coworkers to make sure their alarms are working and haven’t expired. Sharing is easy; whether through social media, phone, text or in person.
"Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are all too often forgotten about until it’s too late. Set a repeating calendar reminder on your phones to check all alarms twice a year and make sure you tell your family and friends to do it, too. Sleep well knowing your alarms are in good working condition." -- Karen Roche, Burlington Fire Chief
