Burlington Mundialization Committee Awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation

Burlington's Mundialization Committee - Itabashi Subcommittee was recently awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation for 2020 as a result of the more than 30-year twinning relationship the cities of Burlington, Ont. and Itabashi, Japan have had with each other.This May will mark the 32nd twinning anniversary.I also recently received a letter from Itabashi Mayor Takeshi Sakamoto congratulating us on this distinctive honour -- you can read the letter here: Congratulatory message from the Mayor of Itabashi CityBurlington Mundialization Committee - Itabashi Subcommittee was nominated for the award for its contribution to enhancing Japan-Canada relations by promoting understanding, goodwill and friendship toward Japan through exchanges with Itabashi.The Foreign Minister's Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. Over the years, the Mundialization Committee has arranged various programs and exchanges between ltabashi and Burlington and relations between the cities have flourished on all levels. The twinning relationship has been demonstrated through regular citizen visits, official delegations, special gift exchanges, student art and pen-pal exchanges and memorable anniversary celebrations.With a population of more than 500,000, Itabashi is located on the Shyakujii, Shingashi and Arakawa Rivers just 45 kilometres northwest of Tokyo.In 2019, the Cities of Burlington and Itabashi celebrated a historic milestone — the 30th Twinning Anniversary.
