City of Burlington Mourns Loss of Laura Grant, Local Resident

It is with great sadness and shock that our community mourns the senseless loss of local resident Laura Grant yesterday, at age 57.According to reports from Halton Police, Laura appears to be the victim of a horrific act of alleged domestic violence at her home on No. 2 Side Road yesterday afternoon. While emergency responders made every effort to attend to her injuries, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and her husband has been charged in the homicide.Through the news and social media, it has already become clear that Laura Grant was a beloved friend and colleague in her role as a longtime dispatcher at the Mississauga Central Ambulance Communication Centre, which provides EMS dispatch to Peel and Halton regions. Through her work, Laura gave back to her community and did what she could to make it a safer place to be. I can only imagine how additionally traumatizing it would have been for those who handled the 911 call and attended to the scene of one of their own, fighting for her life.I want to thank all the emergency responders for everything they did yesterday and to Halton Police for acting quickly to lay charges on the individual they believe is responsible for this devastating act.Women should be able to feel safe in their own homes. We all have a responsibility to do everything we can to keep our community safe and stop violence against women. I encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help to our local police or to our many valuable community organizations, such as Halton Women’s Place.I send my sincere condolences to all those who knew and loved Laura. Flags have been lowered to half-mast today at City Hall in recognition of her service to our community.
