Construction at 421 Brant St. near Burlington City Hall Starting This Month
Construction of the Gallery Condos and Lofts, a 23-storey building located across from Burlington City Hall at 421-431 Brant St., is expected to begin in early this month. Updates from the developer regarding the new building will be shared on the city’s website under Current Developments.The site of the Gallery will take up the block bounded by Brant Street to the west, John Street to the east, James Street to the south and the CENTRO Gardens store to the north.DemolitionDemolition of the existing buildings at 421-431 Brant St. was set to begin after Labour Day and will last approximately two weeks.Sidewalk AccessDuring the demolition, for approximately two weeks, the sidewalk on the east side of Brant Street (between James Street and CENTRO) will be closed and a pedestrian walkway with jersey barriers will be installed. The pedestrian walkway will re-route pedestrian traffic through the existing on-street parking spaces, similar to the pop-up patio configuration used during the summer months outside the Pump House.Once demolition is complete, the sidewalk will be re-instated for the duration of construction with covered hoarding and the on-street parking spaces will re-open.ConstructionConstruction on the project is expected to begin later in September, with work to begin excavating planned for October. It is expected construction will last between two and three years.For the duration of construction:
- five on-street parking spaces on the south side of James Street will be closed;
- the paint lines on James Street will be modified to allow for traffic; and
- the west sidewalk on John Street will be closed and pedestrians will be redirected to the east sidewalk.
Please visit the city’s website for updates about the construction schedule. On that page, you will notice all development application projects for each ward listed in the column to the left.MY TAKE:Construction affecting our streets is never an easy thing, so I do ask our residents living in or driving through this area to please be patient and consider alternate routes. The City of Burlington does submit any public disruptions and/or construction sites to the Waze app in an effort to help our local commuters avoid areas that may slow down their drive around the city.Stay up to date and informed on this project by clicking the links provided above in this post that will take you to the development project page on the City's website.
