Yesterday's task force meeting took place with over 30 participants making time in their increasingly busy scheduled to connect and collaborate.I began by briefing the group on the City of Burlington's ongoing redesign of services including the reopening of Burlington beach once grooming and water quality testing is complete next week, as well as how we will address the need for washrooms in the vicinity.I spoke about the newly engaged Halton COVID-19 Recovery Committee whose first meeting was this past Tuesday, as well as the final of 3 check-in calls that I had with dozens and dozens of local community organizations who are doing more than ever to help those struggling in our city through this pandemic. It was such a pleasure to speak with them, hear about their work, and thank them on behalf of our residents and city council.We spent some time diving into the challenges our local charity groups will have as they look to evolve their fundraising campaigns in a COVID19 world. With less people using cash, and less traffic at malls and other gathering places, it won't be as easy for something like the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign to take place, for example. We spoke with the Chair of the NGO Alliance of Ontario and discussed how we can work together with these essential organizations to ensure they can ideate and innovate ways to maintain their funding and the important work they do.We got an update about the upcoming drive-thru Gift of Giving Back food drive that will be taking place at the Burlington Centre on June 13th and the precautions that will be taken to ensure physical distancing. More information will be available to the community on that event in the coming days.We also continued to discuss the extremely difficult times that are facing our restaurant industry, and the need to be ready with expanded patio capacities and health precautions as soon as the Province gives the green light for them to open.
