Launch of Burlington’s Annual In Memoriam Ceremony to Honour Departed Citizens

Our City's population is approaching 200,000 people and every year, we lose more than 1,200 of our residents. Each person plays a part in our city’s well-being and their loss impacts many others. For this reason, I thought it was important for Burlington to hold an "In Memoriam" Ceremony annually, to help us recognize the members of our community who have passed away in the previous year. The inaugural ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 26, from 12-12:30 p.m. at Civic Square and I will be there to share some words of support for those who attend. All members of our City, who have lost a family member, friend or loved one, are invited to gather at Civic Square to reflect together, as a community, on those we lost in 2019.Our flags at City Hall will be lowered on the day, and our Brant Street Pier will be lit white that evening.Going forward, the City of Burlington's In Memoriam Ceremony will be held on the last Thursday of the month of March. For more information, please visit the dedicated webpage on the City's website: burlington.ca/annual-in-memoriam-ceremony.— Mayor Marianne Meed WardMY TAKE:Burlington is home to many wonderful citizens who make positive impacts on our communities and the people living here. The City of Burlington's In Memoriam Day will be a way to recognize the loss of any of our citizens and the impact that has on our city as a whole and to those closest to them. This annual day will also be a way to honour those citizens who have died and bring our city together to support the bereaved.--*Posted by John Bkila, the Mayor's Media and Digital Communications Specialist
