Nelson Quarry Expansion Application Deemed Complete; Report in September

The application to expand the Nelson Quarry in Burlington into a neighbouring golf course and other properties has now been deemed “complete,” beginning the lengthy process of reviewing the application. The existing quarry is located on No. 2 Side Road and the expansion proposes to extend the quarry to Cedar Springs Road and additional addresses on No. 2 Side Road, per the map.On May 14, 2020, Halton Regional staff received an application to amend the Regional Official Plan to permit an expansion to the Nelson Burlington Quarry. Under the Planning Act, municipalities normally have 30 days to deem the application complete and commence its review. Given the Provincial Order that suspends Planning Act timeframes, the 30-day completeness review window did not formally commence until June 22, 2020. Given this change, the deadline to determine completeness is July 22, 2020.On July 20, 2020, after a thorough review and consultation with the Joint Agency Review Team partners, the Region’s Chief Planning Official has deemed the application to amend the Regional Official Plan complete. City of Burlington staff have also deemed the companion Local Official Plan Amendment applications complete on July 20, 2020.There will be a report on the September Halton Regional Council agenda that will profile key aspects of the application submission and will highlight for Council the next steps, including the work being undertaken by JART and opportunities for engagement and public input. The Region’s website will be updated to ensure the most up-to-date information is provided. The city of Burlington has created a dedicated webpage for all materials and reports related to the Quarry Expansion application. You can find that here: https://www.burlington.ca/en/services-for-you/nelson-quarry-extension.asp.Additional background material on the quarry can be found on the Halton Region’s website, including details of the previous application for expansion that was not approved: https://www.halton.ca/The-Region/Regional-Planning/Mineral-Aggregate-Operations.-- Mayor Marianne Meed WardRELATED LINKS:
