Proclamations are read at the beginning of every regularly-scheduled Burlington City Council meeting.A proclamation is an official announcement issued by the Mayor to recognize exceptional events, groups, people, or achievements in the City of Burlington. July 2023National Drowning Prevention Week: July 16-22, 2023The Lifesaving Society Canada has declared July 16-22, 2023, National Drowning Prevention Week to focus on the drowning problem and the hundreds of lives that could be saved this year.

August 2023Emancipation Month & Emancipation Day: August 2023 & Aug. 1, 2023Burlington, Ontario being the first city in the world to acclaim August as Emancipation month in 2018 at their Halton Black History Awareness Society’s Halton Freedom Celebration Festival.

Burlington Heritage Week: Aug 5-12, 2023The Heritage Week Subcommittee in conjunction with the Heritage Burlington Advisory Committee has developed a week of events this year to recognize and celebrate Burlington’s 150+ years, its Sesquicentennial. This year’s activities will further educate and promote heritage both cultural and built heritage in Burlington. The schedule of events can be found on the City’s website.

Never Give Up Day: Aug. 18, 2023Never Give Up Day is focused on cultivating a mindset of determination to help people get through difficult challenges.

International Day for People of African Descent: Aug. 31, 2023International Day for People of African Descent was proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 68/237 and to be observed from 2015 to 2024; andIn 2020, the United Nations General Assembly adopted by acclamation of a resolution presented by Costa Rica and that was co-sponsored by 52 countries, including Canada, to proclaim August 31 as the International Day For People Of African Descent.

International Overdose Awareness Day: Aug. 31, 2023International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is a global event held August 31st each year to remember those gone too soon from overdose deaths. The IOAD 2023 theme “Recognizing those people who go unseen” is about acknowledging people in our communities who are affected by overdose, but might go unseen in the crisis.
