Pride Month: June 2022In the movement toward equal rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people, a historic turning point occurred on June 28, 1969, in New York City, with the onset of the Stonewall Riots. During these riots, LGBT citizens rose up and fought against the discriminatory criminal laws that have since been declared unconstitutional. Today, Pride Month is not only a celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual and Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2S) individuals, but it is also a month dedicated to spread awareness of the of the violence, discrimination and repression towards those who identify as LGBTQIA2S and the work that still remains to ensure they experience the basic human rights of dignity, respect and safety.
