In 2023, 150 years later the City of Burlington is a diverse and inclusive community that celebrates its history while embracing its present as a multicultural, metropolitan gem where people, nature, and businesses thrive, and that takes pride in protecting its beautiful natural environments, wide ranging leisure, arts and cultural opportunities, and enhancing its economic sustainability.

November 2023Woman Abuse Prevention Month: November 2023The City of Burlington recognizes that no level of violence is acceptable and the elimination of violence against women must be an absolute priority. Community partnerships are important to promoting and supporting the efforts of providing safe shelter for abused women and their children. Governments and institutions have a primary responsibility to demonstrate leadership and provide resources to achieve equality and to end violence.

Economic Abuse Awareness Day: Nov. 26, 2023Domestic Economic Abuse is a common but overlooked form of domestic violence that limits an individual’s financial autonomy, including denying access and control over resources or constraining economic freedom. Barriers to economic resources undermine a survivor’s independence, including the ability to flee abusive relationships. Economic Abuse has detrimental effects on a survivor’s mentaland physical well-being and other social determinants of health.

Giving Tuesday: Nov. 28, 2023Giving Tuesday has been established as a national day of giving on November 28, 2023. It is a celebration of generosity and volunteerism where people give whatever they are able to give, wherever they can.

December 2023International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD): Dec. 3, 2023International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebrates the achievements and contributions of persons with disabilities and raises awareness of the barriers yet to be overcome. There are 1 billion people, 15% of the world’s population, living with a disability. Barriers can take a variety of forms and include the physical environment, information and communications, legislation or policy and societal attitudes and discrimination. When barriers to their inclusion are removed, people with disabilities are empowered to participate fully in civic life.
