Proclamations are read at the beginning of every regularly-scheduled Burlington City Council meeting.A proclamation is an official announcement issued by the Mayor to recognize exceptional events, groups, people, or achievements in the City of Burlington. In 2023, 150 years later the City of Burlington is a diverse and inclusive community that celebrates its history while embracing its present as a multicultural, metropolitan gem where people, nature, and businesses thrive, and that takes pride in protecting its beautiful natural environments, wide ranging leisure, arts and cultural opportunities, and enhancing its economic sustainability.

October 2023Ontario Cadets Week: Oct. 7-13, 2023In recognition of Ontario's three cadet programs -- Air, Army and Navy -- in assisting young people to develop skills that serve them well into their transition into adulthood, with the programs focusing on physical fitness, leadership, citizenship and teamwork skills. Cadets are active members of our communities and make valuable contributions to society on a daily basis.

United Nations Day: Oct. 24, 2023The United Nations (UN) represents humankind’s effort to save humanity from the scourge of war and to promote conditions of peace and well-being for all nations. The UN has provided a forum where the world’s nations may express their concerns about international issues, and where diverse peoples can seek positive and peaceful resolutions to problems. The Burlington Mundialization Committee as part of its program is committed to undertaking a twinning program with a municipality of another country – specifically of our twinning relationships with Itabashi, Japan and Apeldoorn, the Netherlands - and to always fly the United Nations flag with the Canadian flag from City Hall. The UN subcommittee of the Burlington Mundialization Committee promotes global awareness and knowledge of the concept of nations working together in a global economy.

World Polio Day: Oct. 24, 2023Rotary is a global network of neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who unite and take action to create lasting change in communities across the globe. In 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus and in 1988 helped establish the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, that today includes the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to immunize the children of the world against polio. Polio cases have dropped by 99.9 percent since 1988 and the world stands on the threshold of eradicating the disease.

Turkish Republic Day: Oct. 29, 2023October 29, 1923 is the date of the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey by Mustafa Kemal Alaturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Canadian of Turkish descent in Burlington have played a significant role in the educational. Cultural, economic and civic development of our community through sharing their rich cultural heritage and through their dedication to the responsibilities of good citizenship.

November 2023I Read Canadian Day: Nov. 8, 2023The purpose of I Read Canadian Day is to raise awareness of Canadian books and to celebrate the excellence of Canadian literature. Observing the day empowers families, schools, libraries, bookstores, and organizations to host activities and events to encourage reading Canadian books for a least 15 minutes on the day. Canadian books help readers discover themselves by connecting to the vast diversity of our literature. The City of Burlington is a reading city with an award-winning library system and home to several independent bookstores. We encourage the excitement about reading Canadian books and challenge young readers especially to read Canadian stories for a least 15 minutes on I Read Canadian Day and share their experience with their family and friends.
