Proclamations are read at the beginning of every regularly-scheduled Burlington City Council meeting.A proclamation is an official announcement issued by the Mayor to recognize exceptional events, groups, people, or achievements in the City of Burlington. This year’s theme, 'Together, Stronger', created in response to our continued community recovery, emphasizes the importance of standing together to lift up those in need.

National Coaches Week: Sept. 17-25, 2022National Coaches Week encourages Canadians to say thanks and celebrate the tremendous positive impact coaches have on athletes and communities. This week will focus on putting a spotlight on coaches and give this largely volunteer and integral part of Canadian sport our deepest gratitude and thanks.

Terry Fox Day: Sept. 18, 2022We recognize the importance of cancer research as part of the aim and objective of the Terry Fox Run on behalf of the people of the City of Burlington.

National Forestry Week: Sept. 18-24, 2022Urban forests provide a wide range of benefits to cities and the areas around them, and play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Rail Safety Week: Sept. 19-25, 2022It is in the public’s interest to raise citizens’ awareness of the dangers of ignoring safety warnings at level crossings and trespassing on rail property in order to reduce avoidable deaths, injuries and damage caused by incidents involving trains and citizens.

Franco-Ontarian Day: Sept. 25, 2022The Franco-Ontarian Day Act recognizes that Franco-Ontarians commemorate Sept. 25 to celebrate their language and heritage and also take pride in their collective accomplishments.

British Home Children Day: Sept. 28, 2022More than 100,000 poor and/or orphaned children emigrated from across the area of what is now recognized as the U.K. to Canada between 1869 and 1940 and used as farm labour and domestic servants in our Canadian households. These children became known as British Home Children (BHC). There are an estimated 4 million BHC descendants living in Canada today, many of whom settled in the Region of Halton and the surrounding areas, and contributed greatly to the building of our city, including Spencer Smith.This year marks the 153rd anniversary of the first party of BHC to arrive on Canadian shores and in cities across Canada, and the U.K. will be participating in the "Beacons of Light for BHC and Child Migrants Tribute" on Sept. 28 to honour the memory of the BHC and their descendants.

October 2022Probus Club Month: October 2022In the City of Burlington, there are 7 Probus Clubs with more than 1,800 members, collectively, that are very active and meet regularly to enhance the well-being of all members through their fellowship, learning and social activities. These clubs include the:

  • Appleby Women’s Probus Club of Burlington;
  • Men’s Probus Club of Burlington;
  • Mixed Burlington Probus Club;
  • North Burlington Women’s Probus Club;
  • Probus Club of Burlington Lakeshore;
  • Women’s Central Probus Club of Burlington; and
  • Women’s Probus Club of Burlington.

Rett Syndrome Awareness Month: October 2022Rett syndrome is a rare genetic neurological disorder that occurs almost exclusively in girls and leads to severe impairments, affecting nearly every aspect of the individual's life.

National Seniors' Day: Oct. 1, 2022The first day of October recognizes National Seniors' Day -- an annual international celebration to put a spotlight on the integral part older adults play in our community and gives us a chance to show our appreciation.

International Wrongful Conviction Day: Oct. 2, 2022International Wrongful Conviction Day is a global movement dedicated to advocating for innocent individuals who have been wrongly convicted of a crime they did not commit.

Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day: Oct. 18, 2022This year marks the 22nd annual Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day in recognition of the education, dedication, and commitment of child care workers to children, their families and quality of life for the community.
