Province Announces Inquest into the Death of Keira Kagan

MY TAKE:This inquest is essential to ensure there is a thorough investigation into why this happened, with recommendations to make sure this never happens again. Keira was born in Burlington and residents in our community rallied together to support her mother who led this mission to change the system in Keira’s name and memory. I’m grateful to both City of Burlington and Halton Regional councillors who unanimously approved a motion seeking training for judges in coercive control, via 'Keira’s Law'. Not all forms of domestic violence leave bruises. Ensuring judges understand the warning signs is critical to preventing escalation to violence. I thank our MPPs for bringing this initiative forward, and our MPs advocating for 'Keira’s Law' at the federal level through the Senate. Our Burlington Pier was lit purple on Feb. 9 -- the day of Keira's preventable death three years ago -- in honour of her, and to shine a light and raise awareness to prevent domestic violence.
