Burlington, Ont. — May 20, 2021 — At the May 18 Council meeting, City Council unanimously approved a refreshed Burlington 2015-2040 Strategic Plan which is the long-term vision for our city’s future: Vision 2040. Vision 2040 provides a framework for critical decision-making. It helps the City manage its resources today, address the economic and demographic changes to Burlington and better position our community for the next 25 years.Although the plan has a 25-year horizon, there will be four-year work plans, prioritization of the goals and initiatives within the plan and a conversation with the community to connect on our changing city and new realities. Vision 2040 is the 25-year blueprint for city-building. It is supported with the Official Plan, Integrated Mobility Plan, Asset Management Plan, Burlington Economic Development Strategic Plan and Burlington’s Plan: From Vision to Focus, Burlington’s 4-year work plan.
"Vision 2040 provides the City with a measured and strategic approach to help us prioritize the work we do to serve our community. Moving the Plan’s strategic directions forward is important so residents feel the positive impacts to their quality of life and the city can see the benefits of City services. This refreshed Strategic Plan clearly lays out our aspirational goals that will help Burlington progress towards our vision for the future." -- Sheila Jones, Executive Director Strategy, Risk and Accountability, City of Burlington
This Strategic Plan is a refreshed version of the 2016 Strategic Plan. This version keeps the strategic directions consistent: A City that Grows, A City that Moves, A Healthy and Greener City and An Engaging City. The City will continue to monitor, review and evaluate this refreshed Plan to help the City meet our goals and targets and see successful outcomes. As we move towards our vision over the next 25 years, part of the monitoring process of Vision 2040 will include review of resourcing, financial and organizational capacity, reviewing new constraints and new opportunities and shifting plans as needed in an open and transparent way. The City will continue to work with community partners to define how we grow, and to actively shape the physical, social, economic and cultural fabric of Burlington.Quick Facts:
- The Strategic plan was the result of more than a year of public engagement and workshops held in late 2015 and early 2016. Input from residents, businesses, community groups, City employees and members of Burlington City Council were included.
- Vision 2040 encourages common goals across Burlington in partnership with our community to help prepare Burlington for the next 25 years.
- Vision 2040 is a long-term vision for the future, it is a living document. There may be changes along the way, such as: global, regional, and city circumstances changing, events occurring, and other levels of government influencing change. A measured and strategic approach will help with decision-making and adjusting the vision as needed.
MAYOR MEED WARD'S TAKE:Our refreshed 25-year Strategic Plan does a great job of distinguishing between our short-term and aspirational goals. Doing so is critical in properly managing our resources today to better position Burlington for the future. I want to thank City staff for their great work on updating this document and our long-term vision for our future. I look forward to the opportunity to ensure our Strategic Plan aligns with the decisions we and future Councils make inside each of our terms.Links and Resources:
