Several Halton Special Environmental Events Planned for 2019

The following is a Memorandum from Halton Region's Public Works Department - Office of the Commissioner regarding upcoming 2019 Special Events hosted by Waste Management Services.The purpose of this memorandum is to inform Regional Council of the special events Waste Management Services will host between April and October, 2019.Special Waste Drop-off Days Halton Region will be hosting five Special Waste Drop-off Days to provide Halton residents with increased accessibility and convenience to recycle and properly dispose of Household Hazardous Waste and electronics. Residents may drop off, free of charge, Household Hazardous Waste (such as paint, batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, household cleaners, propane tanks and motor oil) and electronics (such as computers, stereos, telephones, VCRs, DVD players, televisions and computer monitors).The events will be held in each of the local municipalities according to the following schedule:

Annual Tree Planting Event at the Halton Waste Management Site – April 27, 2019 In celebration of Earth Day (April 22) and Arbour Day (April 26), and to further promote proper landfill management and raise environmental awareness, a tree planting project will be held at the Halton Waste Management Site in partnership with Scouts Canada and Conservation Halton. This event will continue to enhance the Halton Waste Management Site’s ongoing tree planting and maintenance program.The event will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tree planting will commence at 9:30 a.m., with a picnic lunch to follow.Conservation Halton will be providing a cost effective tree supply and is looking after site preparation, guiding the Scouts in planting, and maintenance services. Mr. Bob Collison, Deputy Area Commissioner of Scouts Canada, has volunteered his time to coordinate and recruit Scouts from the Regional District for the project. Approximately 100 scouts and parents are expected to be on hand to plant the trees.Compost Giveaway – May 6 to May 12, 2019, and Sept. 14, 2019 This year marks the 25th anniversary of Halton Region’s successful Compost Giveaway Program. This popular event has provided compost to almost 120,000 residents since the first event in 1995. During the last 25 years, participants have generously raised $190,000, and donated 142 tonnes of food to Halton area food banks.The Halton Waste Management Site is once again proud to offer this event to the residents of Halton Region. Residents are invited to pick up rich, garden-friendly compost produced through Halton Region’s Yard Waste Program from Monday, May 6 to Sunday, May 12, 2019, as well as Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, during regular operating hours for the Halton Waste Management Site.Residents will have the opportunity to take up to seven garbage bags (or equivalent) of compost per household. General information on backyard composting and the Green Cart Program, as well as paper yard waste bags and stickers, will be made available by Regional staff.Halton residents will also be able to make a non-perishable food or monetary donation to the food banks within Halton during this event.
