*Please see below a news release issued by the City of Burlington.Burlington, Ont. — Sept. 16, 2022 — The City of Burlington is creating new guidelines for patios and temporary tents. An online survey for residents, current patio operators and businesses is open until Oct. 11 at getinvolvedburlington.ca/city-wide-patio-programThe new guidelines will:

  • provide design direction to business operators,
  • think of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists,
  • create consistent rules, regulations and design for patios,
  • create a new, streamlined process to apply for a patio permit for operators.

As part of this work, staff are looking into a City-wide approach to patiosSurvey feedback will help City staff to create new guidelines. Staff want to hear stakeholder experiences with restaurant patios and what changes should be made. The City introduced patios in 2015 under the Pop-Up Patio Program in the downtown core. During the City’s COVID-19 response, the Temporary Outdoor Patios Program was approved by Council and runs until Oct. 31, 2022.For more information, visit burlington.ca/patios or getinvolvedburlington.ca/city-wide-patio-program

"The City wants to hear your experiences with restaurant patios and what changes you may like to see. Contributions from the online survey will help inform the report City staff present to Burlington City Council. Our goal is to continue to help support local business. This means continuing to turn around patio permit applications as quickly as we can. As we put together city-wide patio guidelines and structure, we will monitor and refine this program as needed to best serve our community." -- Mark Simeoni, Director of Community Planning, City of Burlington
