Supporting our Veterans through COVID-19

Last weekend marked the 76th anniversary of the D-Day landing on Juno Beach by Canadian Forces and the beginning of the end of WWII. As many of you know, I was lucky enough to be in Normandy this time last year and share in the 75th anniversary commemoration ceremonies with local D-Day veteran Jim Warford, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Our WWII veterans, most of whom are well into their 90's, are reducing in numbers each year and we must all commit to the powerful mantra: never forget. Our local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion plays a key role in keeping these memories and stories alive, and supporting the well-being of our local vets. Like many organizations, they have been hit hard by COVID-19 and unable to be open or host many of the great programs that fund their existence.Fortunately, they too are adapting to these challenging times and I'm excited to see them hosting a fundraiser next Friday, June 19th accompanied by some amazing entertainment online. The music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Ray Charles tribute artists will put a smile on your face, I guarantee it. You can watch a full promotional video for the event right here!I have seen countless ways that our community has come together to support one another through this pandemic, and I know none of us want to leave our veterans behind either. This fundraiser is a great way to show our support and remind them that we are continually grateful for their service and sacrifice, and for the freedoms and way of life they fought for - and continue to - on our behalf.
