They're Here! Request Your Burlington Road Safety Lawn Signs

At our Burlington City Council meeting on May 25, we approved a direction to implement a Lawn Sign Road Safety Campaign with the goal of promoting safe driving on our neighbourhood streets.To read the full staff report TS-02-19 Road Safety Lawn Sign Campaign, please click the link.We are encouraging residents to post a ‘Please Slow Down’ lawn sign produced by the City of Burlington to encourage safe driving habits and to lower vehicle operating speeds on neighbourhood streets. These signs are available free of cost to residents who are interested.Transportation staff will also be asking residents who participate in the program if they would like to take a short survey, either later this year or early 2020, to gather feedback to be presented to council at a future date. Participation in the survey is voluntary and not mandatory if you wish to simply order a sign.How can I obtain a lawn sign?

• You can visit the Service Burlington counter at City Hall, 426 Brant St., weekdays between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Where am I allowed to place the sign?While placing the signs, residents must make sure they don't create any sight line obstruction and hazard for users of the road.The signs must:

• be set-back a minimum of 0.6 meters (2 feet) from curb or edge of the roadway;
• not obstruct the travelled portion of the roadway, median, traffic island, sidewalk, bicycle path, or multi-use trail;
• be inserted into the ground using the wire frame only;
• be placed where it will not obstruct sight lines for pedestrians, cyclists or drivers; and,
• be placed as supplied and without further illumination or the use of reflective tape.

Unsafe lawn signsLawn signs that are unsafe or needing to be relocated for any reason may be removed or relocated to a more suitable location at any time by the property owner or City of Burlington staff.Over time, lawn signs can degrade, get dislodged or otherwise fall into a state of disrepair. Please make sure your lawn sign is safely maintained and replace it if:

• the wire frame becomes damaged, bent, dislodged from the ground, or otherwise unsafe;
• the plastic covering is damaged or removed; or,
• the sign has other issues that can raise safety concerns, or may prevent the sign from staying anchored into the ground.

MY TAKE:I am supportive of what staff have laid out in their report for this program and believe this campaign can only make our roads safer.
