Updates to Burlington's Coyote Response Strategy Will Help City Mobilize Faster in Response to Issues & Increase Preventative Measures

At our March 28 Community Planning, Regulation & Mobility (CPRM) Committee, we received an update from staff regarding the additional measures to Burlington's Coyote Response Strategy that will help the City mobilize faster in response to issues and increase preventative actions to help our community live safely among coyotes.Here is the full motion we approved at our April 18 Council meeting:

  • Receive and file building and by-law department report BB-03-23 and endorse the actions taken by the Director of Building and By-law to date related to the City’s response to the implementation of a Coyote Action and Awareness Program; and
  • Direct the Director of By-law Compliance to report back as required with any further updates on the program as well as additional future staffing and other resource requirements to support the City’s Coyote Management Strategy.

Among the additional measures laid out in the staff report update are:

  • pop-up programs to inform community;
  • mobile signage; and
  • a full staff complement of 6 staff that can lend to faster mobilization in response to issues in the community.

MY TAKE:I commend staff for all the work they’ve been doing on coyote response – it’s been thoughtful and thorough, and it’s worked. The investment in truly understanding what was causing our past coyote attacks, engaging experts and the Ministry and dealing with it in proactive manner, as well as putting it in our strategies, it was great to see. I’m glad to hear that due to investments we have a more comprehensive Coyote Response Strategy, through pop-up programs to inform the community, mobile signage, etc., and that staff are now able to mobilize faster to respond to any issues.I do want to continue to thank the local Burlington Oakville Coyote Management community group for their thoughtfulness and the recommendations they made to us. I’m glad to see nearly all of those recommendations were put through in this updated strategy. An excellent example of our community feedback helping shape City policy.
