US Tariffs Update — February 11

Following news that US tariffs will be imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum in March, I’ve begun reaching out to our local steel companies to offer whatever support we can to advocate on their behalf.

We are tough—having survived the last round of these damaging tariffs. Our community and our country are ready to fight again for our local jobs and businesses, and for fairness on both sides of the border. Tariffs hurt everyone.

That’s why I joined my colleagues Kelvin Galbraith and Paul Sharman last week to form a Tariff Task Force; to share information, coordinate efforts and take action where we can. Representatives from our steel industry will have a seat at that table, alongside colleagues at the Chamber, Tourism, Economic Development, BIAs and impacted local businesses.

I’ve also asked staff to report back to Committee and Council on a Buy Canadian strategy.

As we do in all times of crisis, we will stand by, and stand together.

Sincerely,

Marianne Meed Ward
Mayor of Burlington
