Burlington Mundialization Committee celebrates spring with twin-city events May 5
Press Release - Two festivals are planned for Saturday, May 5 to celebrate spring and the City of Burlington’s twin cities, Apeldoorn, The Netherlands and Itabashi, Japan.Saturday, May 5, 2018The annual celebration of Canada Netherlands Friendship Day will recognize the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by the Canadian Armed Forces and the 13th anniversary of the City of Burlington’s twinning with the City of Apeldoorn. The event is from 11 a.m. to noon at City Hall, Civic Square and will feature:
- Alexander’s Public School concert band
- Raising of the Canadian and Dutch flags
- Greetings from Mayor Rick Goldring, Consul General Anne van Leeuwen, Elizabeth Witmer, former Deputy Premier of Ontario
- A special poem dedicated to Apeldoorn by Dan Murray
- Apeldoorn and Burlington student artwork display.
Saturday, May 5, 2018The Sakura Festival will celebrate the Japanese cherry blossom at the Art Gallery of Burlington from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The free event will offer:
- Japanese Taiko drum demonstration
- Kiri Koto instrument performance
- Japanese Okihawan vocal and sanshin performance by Chura
- Traditional Japanese dancing by Suzuran Odori
- Japanese Yosakoi dancing by Sakuramai Toronto
- Martial arts demonstrations by Shudokan Family Karate.
