City of Burlington’s Housing Strategy to be Presented at Committee June 7
*Please see below a news release issued by the City of Burlington.Burlington, Ont. — June 2, 2022 — City of Burlington staff will present its final Housing Strategy, Staff report and recommendation for approval of the Strategy to the Community Planning, Regulation and Mobility Committee on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at 9:30 a.m. for review and consideration by Burlington City Council. Residents and stakeholders are invited to review the documents at getinvolvedburlington.ca/housingstrategy.Those wishing to delegate at the meeting can complete the online delegation registration form or email the Office of the City Clerk at clerks@burlington.ca by noon on Monday, June 6.The Housing Strategy sets out the long-term vision for housing in Burlington. The Strategy is built on a set of themes, a series of pathways for implementation and sets out 12 actions that contribute to moving closer to that overall vision for housing in Burlington. Once approved, the Housing Strategy project will move from strategy to action.Phase 1 Wrap-upThe Housing Strategy project has two phases. If the Housing Strategy is approved by Committee and then Council on June 21, the delivery of the Housing Strategy will conclude Phase 1. Phase 2 will focus on implementing the Housing Strategy. Many of the actions will need more study and public input.Quick Facts:
- As the City works towards achieving Burlington’s 25-year Strategic Vision 2040, there are top priorities that significantly impact and enable success for the City. A housing strategy is part of Top Priority - Focus Area 1 - Increasing Economic Prosperity and Community Responsive Growth Management that have been identified by Council and Leadership.
- In January 2021, Burlington City Council endorsed the Housing Strategy Terms of Reference. The City is working with the City’s Housing Strategy Project Team, Housing Strategy Working Group and Housing Strategy Steering Committee.
- In March 2021, the City kicked off the Housing Strategy with a virtual launch and the first Housing Strategy survey to share information about housing in Burlington, collect information about housing concerns and gather feedback on how stakeholders would like to be engaged throughout the project. This information was used to develop the Housing Strategy Project Engagement Plan.
- Over the summer of 2021, technical background work was done by the consulting team. City staff also launched a second Housing Strategy survey to collect residents’ experiences with finding affordable, safe and accessible housing that meets their needs. This helped identify housing issues, gaps and needs.
- In November 2021, staff hosted a virtual open house to discuss the Housing Strategy Project and the findings of the Housing Needs and Opportunities Report.
- City staff presented the Housing Needs and Opportunities Report to Council in December 2021.
- In early 2022, City staff hosted a virtual Public Information Centre and a third online survey to receive feedback on the preliminary vision statement, themes and actions outlined in Chapter 5 of the Housing Needs and Opportunities Report.
- In April 2022, the draft Housing Strategy was released for public consultation and City staff hosted three virtual Open Houses, one in partnership with the Halton Multicultural Council, a fourth online survey and used Konveio to gather feedback on the draft Housing Strategy.
- The finalized Housing Strategy was informed by the feedback received on the draft Housing Strategy through this engagement period. The Housing Strategy Feedback Report provides a detailed overview of the feedback received in 2022, including on the draft Housing Strategy.
