Burlington Receives Peace Flag from MP Karina Gould
On Friday, May 10, the Honourable Minister of Democratic Institutions and Burlington MP Karina Gould came to City Hall to handover the large Canadian flag that is flown from Parliament Hill's Peace Tower in Ottawa. The Peace Flag is changed every weekday, leaving 250 flags per year to distribute to those who have placed their name on the growing waiting list to receive one after it has been flown on the tower. The waiting list is long as it is a great honour to receive this piece of true Canadiana.
MY TAKE:On behalf of the City of Burlington, I am thrilled to receive this flag from Burlington MP Karina Gould so that I may take it with me on my upcoming trip to Juno Beach next month to honour our veterans on the 75th anniversary of D-Day. I look forward to presenting it to the Mayor of Courseulles-sur-Mer, where our troops landed all those years ago and where the Juno Beach Centre Museum now sits. This museum was the brainchild of local veteran Garth Webb, and was designed by Burlington architecture firm Chamberlain Architects.
