Virtual Public Meeting for Nelson Quarry Expansion Application Scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 10
At our Halton Regional Council meeting on November 25, 2020, we unanimously supported the attached motion (Notice of Motion - ARA - Nelson Aggregate.doc) that, among other things:
- Encouraged the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, in the strongest of terms, to require aggregate applicants in Halton Region to hold online public information sessions as prescribed by the Aggregate Resources Act for new and/or expansion applications, including that of Nelson Aggregate Co.’s for its applications to expand the Burlington Quarry; and
- Directed Regional staff to contact Nelson Aggregate Co. to schedule and support the delivery of a virtual public information session.
Our advocacy worked!Nelson Aggregate Co. will be holding a virtual public meeting this Thursday (Dec. 10) from 6-8 p.m. with the help of Halton Region.Residents can join the meeting through Zoom or call 1-855-703-8985. Through the attached link here you’ll find the Meeting ID, Passcode and information for submitting questions in advance.The facilitated session aims to allow residents to bring forward questions and concerns for a response from Nelson Aggregate Co. representatives. A report summarizing the meeting will also be prepared and shared with Regional Council. Staff have reached out to the interested resident groups to ensure they are aware of this opportunity.The timing of this meeting is intended to meet the commenting window for feedback/objections under the Aggregate Resources Act (ARA) process. The deadline for the ARA comments/objections is on Dec. 14. If you have already commented to the City of Burlington, those comments cannot be forwarded to the Ministry, so please send your feedback directly to the MNRF. MY TAKE:I want to thank the Burlington community who have made sure their voice was heard during this process and advocated for transparency and the opportunity to ask their questions in person. Thank you also to Halton Regional Council for approving the resolution that Counc. Rory Nisan and I brought forward and seeing the value in a proper public consultation. Even during the pandemic, we need to give residents the opportunity to voice their concerns and ask questions regarding developments and expansions that will have significant impact on Burlington’s environment. The City of Burlington has held many successful virtual public meetings during 2020, and it is an expectation that Nelson Aggregate must do the same and engage with residents with the help of Halton Region.RELATED LINKS:
