What is Burlington Doing About 'Monster' Homes?
Monster homes have been an issue the City of Burlington has been dealing with for some time. Some initial changes were brought forward through the character area studies, with resulting changes to lot coverage and other matters. These changes were made to zoning and apply to all neighbourhoods of single-family zoning. However, clearly more work needs to be done and out of committee, after hearing from delegations, the City is now reviewing the planning process, as well as specific bylaws — such as those dealing with grading/drainage, etc.Recently, the City also went through a major reorganization, including a new Executive Director of Community Planning, Regulation and Mobility (Heather MacDonald is in that role) and the addition of a new Strategy, Risk and Accountability team to provide greater accountability to residents. As part of that, the City of Burlington initiated a new role for customer service and business improvement, and one of the reasons was to provide a single point of contact to help shepherd planning applications, and provide residents a point of contact. The individual currently in that role on an interim basis while the position is being posted is Mike Greenlee. For some time the City has also had an ombudsman for residents to contact regarding city services.
