Summer Temporary Patios and Sidewalk Detours Coming to Burlington

*ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTE: The provincial government has announced Ontario will be entering Step 1 of its Roadmap to Reopening this Friday (June 11).**Please see below a news release issued by the City of Burlington.Burlington, Ont. — June 4, 2021 — Earlier this year, before the Provincial Stay-at-Home Order, Burlington City Council approved the temporary patio program for the 2021 patio season. Council also approved expediting the approval process for 2020 temporary patio permit holders to allow their permits to be renewed this year based on their 2020 patio approvals. Application fees for the 2021 temporary patio program are being waived to help businesses recover during the COVID-19 pandemic.The patio program will officially begin once the Province of Ontario moves into Step 1 of the Roadmap to Reopen, the province’s three-step plan to safely lift public health measures based on provincewide vaccination and infection rates.In anticipation of the patio program reopening on June 14, 2021, sidewalk detours and patio set-up will begin next week. As long as public health measures allow, the patio program will run until Oct. 31, 2021.

We must do everything we can to support our downtown businesses and I was pleased to support City Council’s approval of the patio program again this summer. I know from my work as the Council liaison to the Burlington Downtown Business Association (BDBA), that I am not the only one who is looking forward to seeing patios start to ‘pop up’ around the city. We are all working together so our local businesses can be ready to open once we enter Stage 1 of the Province’s new COVID Framework.I encourage residents to take note of the sidewalk detours the City is installing around the downtown core and support our local business owners once they are able to open their businesses again this summer. I know that our local business owners are ready and eager to welcome customers back to dine and shop in a safe environment that the City’s patio program is helping to implement. Sidewalk DetoursSome patios will be installed on City sidewalks and these sections of the sidewalk will be detoured onto the road with traffic barriers. These barriers will help with social distancing and pedestrian safety.City of Burlington staff will be installing the sidewalk detours during the week of June 7, 2021The sidewalk detours for patios are being installed in downtown Burlington on:

  • The north side of Pine Street between Elizabeth Street and Pearl Street
  • The east side of John Street between Pine Street and Lakeshore Road
  • The north side of Lakeshore Road between Brant Street and John Street
  • The north side of Lakeshore Road between Locust Street and Brant Street
  • The west side of Brant Street between Elgin Street and Lakeshore Road
  • The east side of Locust Street between Elgin Street and Lakeshore Road
  • The west side of Brant Street between Maria Street and Caroline Street
  • The east side of Brant Street between Maria Street and James Street
  • The north side of Elgin Street between Locust Street and Brant Street
